WINTER SPRING HOLIDAY 2017

Saturday 21st January -Travel and walk at Sayers Croft*** - sunny

We are off today to Rob’s then on to France and Spain to ski and hopefully have some warmth!!
We had a great journey to Rob’s only two and half hours. We went for a walk around the grounds and saw the new ropes course and round the woods and home. They treated us to a meal at Ask in Cranleigh with Tesco points turned into vouchers:) Home for a coffee and chocolates. Went back to the van about 10.30 for our first chilly night in our mountain of duvets!! We put the diesel heater on for a bit to take the edge off.

Sunday 22nd January – Walk around Ewhurst **** Travel, sunny

Good night – but must dig my top with a hood out to keep my head warm! In to Rob and Hannah’s for breakfast of pastries. After lunch we went for a brilliant walk with Rob through the surrey countryside around Sayers croft and saw sheep and deer :) Hannah stayed at home to do marking. Rob made a curry for tea and we watched the chase. We left for the shuttle around 7 and made good time considering the thick fog in places. Made our crossing cut off point at 8.50 and crossed at 9.20. We stayed the night on the cliff top at Mont Hubert, Escalles. Unfortunately I left my battery charger at Robs so we are going to have to sort that out tomorrow because I cant live without my camera in working order!

Monday 23rd January – Travel - foggy

Very very foggy and no chance of even seeing the English Channel let alone the white cliffs of dover! We had a leisurely start then drove to Boulogne and went to the huge L’clerc to get diesel and see if they had a battery charger but sadly no. We did get a brilliant gadget for clearing condensation. Rob and Hannah have one for their windows. We went to McDonalds and solved the problem of the charger by ordering a double one with an English plug from Amazon France and having it delivered to Arwen and Jay after having a good facebook chat with him. We will go and stay at theirs and pick it up when it arrives. We had a good time in there looking through facebook and watching Ed Sheerans new video about The Castle on the Hill which features his love for Framlingham and also has footage of the docks and the grove park at Felixstowe!! We carried on driving down our usual route with the fog clearing, stopping for lunch at the Somme Aire and eventually stopping at the lake at Meziere en Drouais near Dreux. It is the one with the dolman on the island we stayed at and walked round in September. We had salmon and potatoes for tea.

Tuesday 24th January – walks **** Dolman Lac, Chatres, Beaugency – foggy with light rain & snow

We woke to another hazy day but not anywhere near as foggy as yesterday. We read and had breakfast then had a lovely long walk around the main lake seeing lots of humped off birds on the thick ice. Most of the lakes are solid but one had some water for them to enjoy. One swan was really slipping and sliding around poor thing. We even saw a kingfisher! Back to the van and drove down to Chartres. In the autumn we tried to park to see the cathedral close up as we have seen it in the distance on countless journeys. We managed to park in the perfect spot. Had lunch and then walked up through the old streets to the magnificent cathedral – it is absolutely enormous and in the process of slowly being cleaned. Well worth the trip. Walked back down lots and lots of steps back to the van and drove on to Beaugency to the Aire where we parked at the end of October and biked 40 miles!! This time we only managed to walk over the Loire via the road bridge and back but that must bring our total for today to around 5 miles surely!! We had a read and doze then lasagne for tea.
